Author-illustrator Clay Carmichael grew up in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She attended Hampshire College in Amherst, Massachusetts and graduated with highest honors in creative writing from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. 

She is the author of the young adult novel Brother, Brother (Roaring Brook) and author-illustrator of the award-winning novel Wild Things (Boyds Mills Press) and the picture books Bear at the Beach, Used-Up Bear and Lonesome Bear (North-South), recently collected in a combined edition as Bear at the Beach and Other Adventures (Sea Grass Press/Quarto). Her books have been translated into many languages. She was also a contributor to The Secret to Their Success: How 33 Women Made Their Dreams Come True (Carolina Women's Press).She promotes and teaches writing and illustrating in schools. 

She lives with her husband, sculptor Mike Roig, and an ever-growing number of spoiled feral cats in Carrboro, North Carolina.
