Heather Mackey lives in Berkeley, California, with her husband, two children, and a demanding dog. She grew up in Southern Arizona, where her major childhood preoccupations were reading and swimming. Even now the memory of favorite books carries with it the faint smell of chlorine.

Heather went to school at Smith College where she chose a practical major in Classics. Later, she received an MFA from the University of Arizona. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area, she has worked as a journalist, critic, and marketer for technology companies.
